Kuro Kin Japanese Dining Singapore Food Review

While misterchewy is still away in the States, my family celebrated my birthday with me a few days before the actual day since I stay with my in laws on weekdays. Yay! I got to eat my favorite Japanese cuisine again! My mum wanted to go to The Grandstand so it was down to Kuro Kin Japanese Dining among the few Japanese restaurants over there.

Before I delve into the food review, I have to say that the wait for our sashimi was excruciatingly long when the restaurant was not even half occupied. It certainly didn’t leave a very good first impression on us. Besides, we noticed that the table next to us arrived much later but got their food served first! We asked the wait staff and it turned out that it was “the Chef’s arrangement”. I wonder is that fair?

Received two types of appetizers on the house because they acknowledged that we had waited for too long for our food! Thankfully, the appetizers tasted pretty decent.

We ordered the Sashimi Take ($86) to share among my dad, brother and I. My mum is the only one in the family who doesn’t eat raw food while I can never have enough of sashimi! These were very firm, fresh and thickly sliced.

I needed my rice and was trying to decide between sushi and chirashi. Decided that it was easier to share the Kuro Kin Sushi ($45). Love all the sushi pieces that I ate!

Ebi Tempura ($23) was lightly battered to a nice shade of golden brown and was crispy.

Highly recommend the Gindara Moriawase ($26) which is grilled cod fish coated in three different sauces – sweet miso, mentaiko and teriyaki sauce. I like the mentaiko one best!

We ordered the Surume Ika Teriyaki ($20) because my mum loves grilled squid with sweet teriyaki sauce. Alternatively, you can also order the shioyaki version which is coated with sea salt. The squid was still quite chewy!

We also ordered two bowls of Kaisen Chahan ($12) to share because we have two big men in the family. The seafood fried rice was very fragrant albeit a little oily.

Ah Yat Abalone Forum Restaurant: Family Dinner Before Misterchewy Travels to USA

Yesterday, we sent misterchewy off in the wee hours of the morning. He will be in working America for two weeks! Chanelle was sleeping when we plucked her out of bed at around 3am. She woke up with a very puzzled look and was surprisingly very well behaved throughout! It was a very sad moment for me to see misterchewy walking towards the departure gate and my tears started rolling down my cheeks :'( It’s gonna be our first time being apart for so long after 5 years together. Speaking of which, it’s our 5th year dating anniversary tomorrow! 🙂

A week before his work trip, both our families had dinner together at Ah Yat Abalone Forum Restaurant at Hotel Grand Pacific. All photos were taken by misterchewy! The food was generally quite good. Sorry no time to go into detail!

Paradise Pavilion: Best Peking Duck in Singapore

When we celebrated my dad’s birthday at The Fullerton Hotel’s Town Restaurant last year, I was still in the early stage of my pregnancy. I remembered that my mum actually said , “This time next year, there will be a little baby to celebrate together with us!” 🙂 This year’s celebration sure feels a lot happier than the last with Baby Chanelle around!

My mum did her own research by reading up on food blogs and finally decided on Paradise Pavilion under the Paradise Group, located at Marina Bay Financial Centre. I fell in love with the sophisticated contemporary setting upon stepping into the restaurant.

It has this very posh yet cosy feeling.

Diners will be able to marvel at the Peking duck chefs executing their craft in full view. The fire brick oven had been constructed in a traditional fashion with imported materials from Beijing. Apple wood is used for roasting of the Peking duck which further accentuates its full flavour and fragrance.

To start the dinner, we each had a very yummy appetizer of crab meat with a hint of wasabi.

A hearty bowl of Double Boiled Chicken with Morel Mushroom Soup ($12) to warm the tummy!

One of my favorites that night, the Fillet Cod with Miso Sauce ($18) was firm and flaky, topped with delicious miso sauce that was sweet yet savoury.

I was looking forward to trying the Kurobuta in Garlic Sauce ($16) but felt that the sauce was a little too overwhelming and covered up the taste of the kurobuta. On a more positive note, the meat was really tender.

Paradise Pavilion is renowned for its Authentic Apple Wood Roasted Peking Duck ($88) which is arguably the best peking duck in Singapore. Please bear in mind that reservations are required. It is served straight out of the oven and is carved deftly before diners.

The duck’s breast skin is the fattiest and crispiest part. It is served separately as thin slices and best enjoyed on its own or with a dab of sugar.

The rest of the sliced duck meat was wrapped in rice flour sheet which was kinda thick so I ended up eating the tender duck meat on its own!

The Ramen with Lobster in XO Sauce ($28) certainly wowed all of us. The lobster was the size of my palm! Ramen was actually like ee-fu noodles and had a spicy kick to it.

I shall start off this post by saying that Sawadee Thai Cuisine is my favourite Thai restaurant in Singapore. Please don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying this because it’s an invited session. In fact, I had blogged about my experience in 2010 after my mum introduced this gem to us. Don’t play play, my mum is also a foodie. She used to frequent Sawadee Thai Cuisine with my grandma and aunts during lunch (they work together) and one day, she told me that the restaurant at Sembawang had closed down and that she was feeling very sad about it. LOL. I also felt sad la, until not long later, Andrew’s email came to say that they have relocated to a more convenient location at Bugis! Quickly shared the good news with my mum and she went there for lunch with the entire gang that very same week.

Recently, misterchewy and I dropped by Sawadee Thai Cuisine together with fellow blogger Mag from Modgam to try out one of their Father’s Day menu ($168+ for 4 person) which will still be available this weekend. Coming back here felt like being reunited with an old friend, and there was this warm and fuzzy feeling when we were trying to get used to the restaurant’s new look. We had some drinks while waiting for the dishes to be served. The Lemongrass drink was quite sweet and aromatic.

Tea lovers should definitely try their Thai Iced Milk Tea which was very fragrant and not overly thick.

Prior to this visit, I had not tried more than half of the dishes from the Father’s Day menu and the Thai Rice Crackers were one of them. Doesn’t the dip look like chicken mayo? Haha. The rice crackers tasted bland on their own but when topped with the creamy chicken dip, this turned out to be a pretty yummy appetizer.

Generously stuffed with crabmeat, the Thai Crab Cakes was a delight to bite into due to its crunchiness and it was packed full of flavour.

The Tom Yum Soup is one of our must-orders at Sawadee Thai Cuisine. We learned that they actually cater to local tastebuds and the boss claimed that many customers provided feedback that their tom yum soup was too spicy so it has been made slightly less spicy. I was eager to try it and it was quite spicy for someone who eats small chili padi all the time. My dining counterparts did not manage to finish their share but I really loved the spicy fiery kick and it was also deliciously sour. Not forgetting the generous chock full of ingredients we found in the pot. One word – SHIOK!

Just as its name suggests, the Three Flavoured Grouper was a delectable combination of sweet, tangy and spicy. Best to eat this when it’s served piping hot so that the fish doesn’t soak up too much of the gravy and turn soggy. We could still taste the sweetness and freshness of the fish underneath that golden crispy layer.

I was happy to see Pandan Chicken because I remembered having it back then when we went to Bangkok and I loved it so much!

Marinated before being wrapped, the pandan chicken was tender, juicy and very flavorful.

I was quite surprised to see the Fried Fish Maw with Beansprouts because it seemed more like a Chinese dish to me. Or is it? Whatever it is, all of us loved this! It had a very nice eggy taste and was deliciously soft and fluffy! It might look like a simple dish on the menu but everyone should order this.

Sawadee Thai Cuisine’s Olive Rice is one of the best that I have tried. It had just the right amount of greasiness and tasted extra flavorful when mixed with dried shrimps. And of course, the strips of chicken were the icing on the cake.

The first dessert that we tried was Durian Glutinous Rice. I’m a bigggg fan of durian and this was very much to my liking!

For those who don’t eat durian, the Mango Glutinous Rice is a much safer option. The chunks of ripe mango tasted exceptionally sweet and it was an interesting pairing with purple glutinous rice.

Lastly, we had the Thai Red Rubies which all of us felt wasn’t sweet enough. Of course we had to give them the benefit of the doubt after having two extremely sweet desserts. And to be fair, the red rubies were very crunchy.

Ever since I became a mum, I have learned to treasure pockets of free time for myself. Really grateful that both our parents are more than happy to help us take care of the little one so that we can have a quiet dinner together on weekdays after misterchewy comes back from work or a whole day out on weekends. Sometimes, it’s also very difficult to agree to invites because I need to factor in my pumping schedule and 1001 other things. Mehhhhh. And it’s no joke having to lug so many things around without hubby’s help!

I was invited to try GRUB’s lunch menu on a Saturday and knowing that misterchewy had always wanted to sink his teeth into GRUB’s famous fish burger, I readily accepted and we left Chanelle at home! LOL 😛 We have been putting this aside for the longest time because of its location. However, I have come to realise that it’s actually quite nice to house a bistro at Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park as it creates a very fun and family-friendly dining environment.

GRUB is opened by the guys who founded Cookyn Inc and they place a strong emphasis on food that is responsible, inspired and delicious – basically, food that they serve their own families. I would also like to share that the food is reasonably priced and very friendly to the wallet. I didn’t find anything that costs more than $20 on the menu (subject to GST)!

Both the Yuzu Mint Soda ($4.50) and Iced Honey Lime Juice ($3) are perfect thirst quenchers on a hot and sunny day. You can also find pure fruit juices and other canned drinks on the menu.

Step aside, truffle fries! Mentaiko Fries ($9) are here to blow everyone away! Who would have thought that mentaiko aioli and fries could go so well together? The thinly shredded pieces of nori seaweed also made this yummy appetizer a whole lot more palatable and addictive. I just couldn’t stop munching on them!

If you have always enjoyed your toast with half boiled egg, it’s time to give the Truffled Egg Cocotte ($7) at GRUB a try! The taste of truffle is a little overwhelming but hey, I’m certainly not complaining. However, I thought there could be a better option other than toasted focaccia as it kinda failed to soak up the egg cocotte.

Only available for brunch, the French Toast ($12) is a delicious winning combination of sweet and savory. The garlic thyme pork sausage was big and juicy, and tasted wonderful with strawberries, sour cream and maple syrup. It is the perfect breakfast that I imagine myself having everyday.

GRUB is famous for its Crispy Fish Burger ($14); everyone is singing praises for it! Only sustainable fish caught in waters free from contamination is used and it tastes fresh and moist under that beautiful golden brown crispy layer. GRUB pays a lot of attention in serving only the best. Even the burger buns are specially brought in from a local bakery which are fluffy and have a soft doughy texture.

The hubs and I don’t eat beef but we do know that GRUB uses beef that is 100% grass fed and free-range so you can feast on your GRUB Double Cheeseburger ($18) in peace!

We also tried two other dishes which are new on the menu. The Sakura Ebi Pasta ($17) is available for lunch and dinner only. Interestingly, it tastes like prawn mee dry with a twist. The tiny bits of fried Sakura ebi and mentaiko sauce gave this dish an extra fragrance and sweetness.

I really love the Slow Cooked Pork Belly ($17)! Sous vide and seared, it’s so tender and succulent and does not have that overwhelming porky smell, probably because the pigs are being fed a local feed of barley, wheat and mountain mineral water. The pork belly is paired sauteed leeks and sweet potato mash which I found unique but proved to be a winner. This dish is only available during dinner.

Finally, for something sweet, we had the Chocolate Kladkakka ($8) which I found impossible to fault. What could possibly go wrong with creamy vanilla gelato, moist and crumbly sticky chocolate cake, and strawberry sauce? It’s the kind of dessert that people of all ages will love!

The Churros ($9) at GRUB are not bad and we all know that it’s so hard to find good ones in Singapore. Glad to know that the churros here are hand made, which explains why they come in various lengths. The churros are quite fluffy on the inside but a little stiff on the outside. On the overall, they still tasted quite good when dipped into the dark chocolate sauce.

My Very First Mother’s Day

Happy Mother’s Day to me and all mummies out there! It felt very heartwarming to receive numerous texts from friends yesterday 🙂 The husband and I travelled back to my parents’ place together with Chanelle to stay over for the weekend. Thanks to my mum who offered to take care of Chanelle! We managed to take a breather and unwind ourselves through good food and retail therapy! 😀 Being a mother is really not easy. It drives me crazy and wears me out, but of course, a big toothless grin from my baby really brightens up my day! Chanelle is almost 2 months old now and she’s really smiling a lot more than before 🙂 Because our little one is still so young and requires too much of our attention, we decided to go for mother’s day dinner without her around 😛 At least we can eat in peace and not have to rush through our meal and feel so stressed! Felt bad but we will definitely include Chanelle next year 🙂

Our dinner venue was decided out of spontaneity. The husband shortlisted a couple of places but I wasn’t too keen. The night before just when we were about to go to bed, he said, “Let’s go to Keppel Bay!” Asked if he was thinking what I’m thinking. YES! We were both thinking about Takumi Tokyo. Hehe. We had our first year wedding anniversary dinner there in 2012. 🙂 The menu hasn’t changed and this time, we ordered the Salmon Belly Sashimi ($25). Not as fatty as I would have liked it to be.

Looking back on my previous blog post, the dishes that we ordered this time were the ones that left us a positive and lasting impression back then. Assorted Sushi ($35) comprises of 8 sushi pieces and 1 roll. Loved the uni!

The Chirashi Sushi ($38) is what I call “Happiness in a bowl”. Even the sushi rice is worthy of mention.

Grilled Assorted Mushrooms ($22) were flavorful and tasted mildly sweet. Must have been coated with butter!

The Pan Seared Foie Gras with Wine Jelly ($35) was melt-in-the-mouth smooth. Definitely will order this every time we visit Takumi!

Again, the Grilled Lamb Rack Marinated with Apple Miso Sauce ($25) was very tender but it was even saltier than the previous visit!

Valentine’s Day 2014 @ Tamashii Robataya

So glad that Valentine’s Day fell on a Friday this year! I applied for leave, but not really because it’s V Day la. Went for my weekly checkup at Mount E and was told by my gynae to rest more because both mother and baby didn’t gain any weight for the past week. I admit that my schedule is getting more hectic as I’m getting close to my EDD but it feels good to be moving around because I really think it’s not good to be sedentary. The long weekend was a very fulfilling one for misterchewy and I because we accomplished quite a few tasks, albeit being very last minute as usual! And the photo you see above? We will definitely blog about it soon! 🙂

The husband had actually shortlisted a few places for our Valentine’s Day dinner and I was told to choose one that I like best. OMG all of them are Italian restaurants! Ok la more romantic but I was craving for Japanese food and suggested Tamashii Robataya because I had read some pretty good reviews. Reservations were made and we were there before 7pm. Was trying to decide between the omakase or set dinner and we agreed on the $128++ set dinner. If you have any dietary restrictions, feel free to let them know and they will have the particular dish replaced with something else of similar value.

The Sashimi Moriwase is originally on the menu, which was only enjoyed by misterchewy. So sad that I could only watch him eat this. LOL.

After having small servings of the first few dishes, we were surprised that the Yaki Sakana was about the size of my palm. Before that, we were thinking how were we ever going to get full at this rate. Haha. The fish was grilled to perfection and was very juicy!

I’m gonna say yes if anyone’s gonna ask me if we will revisit Tamashii, thanks to the Pork Cheeks Donburi which was very fabulous. Explosive flavors with every mouuthful! Will be back for this!

Dessert of the day was Pumpkin Ice Cream on Pumpkin Cake which was pretty refreshing. The pumpkin cake tasted a little like caramel pudding though.

I have a soft spot for all things sweet and was delighted when Judy Then from Happy Avenue asked if I would like to try some of her bakes. Naturally, I said YES! We got to sample an assortment of 7 different flavors in the box of 12 cupcakes – Signature Valrhona Triple Dark (best seller), Vanilla Lemon Cream, Red Velvet, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Chocolate Salted Caramel, Chocolate Brazilian Coffee and Vanilla Strawberry. The husband and I loved the Signature Valrhona Triple Dark, Chocolate Peanut Butter and Chocolate Brazilian Coffee best. The rest of the flavors were equally amazing too but we just cannot live without chocolate 😛 Judy’s cupcakes were really fluffy and moist, which were best enjoyed with a pot of hot green tea.

Judy really has a knack for baking. Those who have tried baking kueh lapis will know that it’s not easy, yet Judy does it marvellously well! Our mixed flavors box contained 3 out of 4 available flavors – Plain, Prune, Signature Nutella and Chocolate Chip. Haha misterchewy and I actually polished the entire box in one night during our staycation! 😛 I can’t decide if I prefer Prune or Nutella. All I knew was that we were busy chomping down slice after slice because they were really addictive! Who cares about dieting?!

Ming Kitchen Brings Precious Treasures for a Prosperous 2014

Ming Kitchen, the zhi char chain under the group, with a string of 32 outlets, have prepared a treat for their 2014 Chinese New Year Menu where diners will be able to fill their tummies for a prosperous ‘Horse’ year in 2014.

Dried Oyster stuffed in Prawn Roll/黄金蚝事 (Available in set menu)

The traditional prawn roll, or more familiarly known as ‘hae-cho’, has been recreated to have mixed in dried oysters into the roll’s filling – and then coated with mashed potato flakes like how chefs usually coat cereals when preparing Cereal Prawns. The Knorr Mashed Potato mentioned earlier, is prepared from fresh potatoes and then dehydrated. Instead of adding liquids and seasoning to make it the Western Mashed Potato, Ming Kitchen stir-fried it and added spices to create a coating to wrap the 黄金蚝事. It is distinctly different from fried cereal or oatmeal and is discernible from its texture which is smooth and also has that melt-in-your-mouth sensation.

Abalone Treasure Pot/鲍鱼盆菜 ($168)

The traditional festive dish where many Chinese families have during CNY boasts a slew of fresh and dried seafood such as South African Abalone, Braised Pig’s Trotters, Salted Drumstick, Fish Maw and Dried Oyster, which bodes great fortunate for the family. Chef Desmond has skilfully transformed the base stock of this traditional dish by using UFS’s chicken and scallop stock for a time-efficient prepared dish.

Chinese New Year reunion set menus are priced at $138 and $198 for 6 pax, and range from $198 to $428 for 10 pax. Be the first 100 customers to order the $428 set menu and receive a prosperity gift worth $68.80.

Reunion Imperial High Tea @ Si Chuan Dou Hua

Reasonably priced at $32++ per person, the ever so popular Reunion Imperial High Tea will be available now to 14 February 2014, from 2.30pm to 6pm, at all three Si Chuan Dou Hua branches. This is ideal for friends who wish to catch up and partake in the auspicious Lo-Hei activity together over the Chinese New Year period without bursting the wallet, and yet still be able to enjoy quality dim sum and Chinese tea pairing at the same time.

The oriental 8-course high tea menu features the traditional Yu Sheng and six other handcrafted dim sum items and light bites, before wrapping up on a sweet note with some Nian Gao and glutinous rice balls. Indulge without guilt as the menu is paired with two different premium Chinese brews including Pu Er, a black tea variant that helps to warm the stomach, aid digestion and break down fat, which is particularly beneficial after the festive feasting. The dim sum offerings vary slightly across the three branches.

Toss to greater heights with Si Chuan Dou Hua’s Prosperity Salmon Yusheng with Crispy Fish Skin which is thoughtfully customized according to group size. We had the Ikan Parang fish as a substitute to salmon.

Prepared by smoking a marinated chicken over tea leaves of the camphor plant, the tender and succulent Camphor Tea Smoked Chicken was certainly very aromatic and a great appetite whetter for the remaining dishes to come.

The Double-boiled Seafood Dumpling in Superior Soup was deliciously savory and the seafood dumpling, packed full of ingredients, was a crowd-pleaser.

Couldn’t really taste the wasabi in the Steamed Abalone Dumpling with Wasabi Sauce but it boasted such deliciously clean and delicate flavors, which made me secretly crave for more. It goes well with the accompanying chilli sauce, but I reckon it tastes equally awesome on its own.

The Steamed Fish Ball with Black Moss is possibly made from scratch and was surprisingly very light in taste.

Found it hard to believe that the Deep-fried Radish Puff with Conpoy was crafted by Si Chuan Dou Hua’s male pastry chefs. They look so exquisite and delicate! It’s also worth mentioning that the radish puff remained warm for a very long time.

I love lotus leaf rice and the Fried Rice with Assorted Sausage wrapped in Lotus Leaf surpassed my expectations. The fried rice was very fragrant as it had absorbed the flavor of the lotus leaf. Wash it down with some Longjing tea!

For those with a hearty appetite or require an additional carbo boost, I highly recommend the Si Chuan Dan Dan Noodles ($6.80++ during CNY period) which is not included in the Reunion Imperial High Tea menu. The portion is just nice for one, after all the savory dim sum dishes. The dan dan noodles was enticely spicy enough and the noodles were thin and springy.

I would say that the Glutinous Rice Balls in Chinese Rice Wine is an acquired taste judging by the responses around our table but I’m glad I liked it.

I would prefer the Pan-fried New Year Cake with Glutinous Pearls to be light and fluffy as I found this a little oily and also tough to chew.
