Yay it’s another one of our monthly foodie outings again! This is roughly one third of the total strength (there were a total of 3 tables) that night!
From left: Rae, Yan Cai, Alvin, Lobster, Meng Ching, Angela and us! They are a very lovely and chatty bunch of people! πŸ™‚

It was Maureen’s idea to go to JB Ah Meng for Cze Char dinner and initially, I thought that we were going to Johor Bahru! Turned out to be in Geylang…but still! Geylang leh! How exciting right?! Nice experience to be sitting and having dinner along the alley of Geylang. Kinda reminds me of my trip to Kuala Lumpur with one of my best uni friends during my undergraduate days!

Deep Fried Fish Skin (Medium) - $13

First up, we had the Deep Fried Fish Skin ($13 – medium) as our appetizer. Haha at least I think it’s like an appetizer la. On its own, the fried fish skin was crispy but a little hard. It was a pity that the sweet chili sauce was not able to further enhance its taste.

Chicken with Mushroom (Large) - $15

We were all wondering what this was as it did not look like a typical cze char dish. Looked yummy and tasted yummy too! The gravy in the Stewed Chicken with Liang Fen ($15 – large) was quite savory and we could not resist slurping up a few mouthfuls of it. Loved the chicken which was quite tender. Oops the liang fen cannot be seen here. It’s transparent and has a jelly-like texture.

Fried Fish Head (Medium) - $18

The Fried Fish Head ($18 – medium) was salty and spicy enough for my liking while others might want some plain rice to go along with this.

J.B. San Lou Meehoon (Large) - $10

We were quite amused by the presentation of the J.B. San Lou Meehoon ($10 – large). It was like…yeah….just a huge plate of fried beehoon. Veggies were all hidden underneath. Even though this looked boring, the beehoon turned out to be pretty tasty and everyone went for more helpings πŸ™‚

Vegetable with Golden Mushroom (Medium) - $12

I was happy to see the Vegetable with Golden Mushroom ($12 – medium) as I love mushrooms and tofu! Mushrooms were juicy, while the tofu was slightly fried to crisp perfection on the outside.

Brinjal Potato with Chilli (Large) - $15

I was probably frowning in disapproval when the Brinjal Potato with Chilli ($15 – large) was served because I simply don’t like green capsicum. The first thing I picked up was the sliced brinjal and it tasted so good! The batter in which it was coated in obviously made it very fragrant and delicious.

Deep Fried Fermented Bean with Belly Pork (Large) - $12

Chewy Charles and I thought that the Deep Fried Fermented Bean with Belly Pork ($12 – large) had a pretty weird taste, probably due to the fermented bean. But after a couple of slices, we got used to its taste. Good old fried pork that could have done better if it weren’t so tough.

White Pepper Crabs (3 pc) - $24

My family and I usually go to No Signboard Seafood Restaurant for our fix of white pepper crabs so I was thrilled to know that JB Ah Meng has White Pepper Crabs ($24 – 3 pcs) too! In fact, I prefer white to black pepper crabs πŸ˜€ The ones here were not bad! I might get my parents to try one day. The crabs were very well-infused with the fiery white pepper. Finger lickin’ goooooood! πŸ˜‰

Lotus Root Chips with sugar peas (Large) - $15

I first picked out a slightly charred chip from the Lotus Root Chips with Sugar Peas ($15 – large) dish which was kinda bitter but it turned out to be an exceptional chip. The sliced lotus chips resembled unsalted potato chips! Most of the foodies from our table liked this πŸ™‚

Salted Egg Prawn Ball (Large) - $24

Whoohoo! Here comes the Salted Egg Prawn Ball ($24 – large)! I could feel the excitement around our table as everyone hurriedly snapped photos of this dish before tucking in. The funny thing was, we had to fish out the salted egg coated balls that contained prawns because there were some that were plain flour! Yeah Rae ate her first piece and commented that she didn’t taste any prawn. Haha! Chewy Charles said that it tasted like mooncake which I thought was pretty interesting!

At the end of the dinner, all of us forked out $20 each which is very reasonable for all the food that we ate! I think that most of us turned up because we were also lured by the durian feast plan! You can read more about it on Ellena’s blog πŸ™‚ Yay! We can’t wait for the next outing! Ohh, but wait.. Stay tuned for our impromptu dinner post! πŸ˜›
