RamenPlay: What’s not in the broth?

Chewy Charles’ exams are finally over and he’s free to play for all he wants! But of course, need to eat first then got energy to play 😛 We have not hit the shopping malls along Orchard Road for at least a month, so… off we went! Located at the trendy 313@Somerset, RamenPlay is BreadTalk Group of Companies’ latest dining concept, in collaboration with Japanese giant Sanpou Co. Ltd. Ok, I’m gonna quit the introduction and move on to the food!

Not feeling entirely hungry, I went straight for the the mini selection of ramen. The Mini Value Combo ($11.80) consists of a mini ramen bowl, a side and a drink. I decided to stay away from spicy ramen choices. That way, I could have a better gauge of the broth. The Mini Tonkotsu Ramen came with a thin slice of char siew which was tender but not particularly impressive. I liked the delicate hard boiled egg white but wished that the yolk was more runny. The appearance of the soup gave the game away. I believe that anyone who’s craving for a good bowl of ramen would want a milky, hearty and full-bodied pork bone broth. I’m not saying the saltier the better, but in my opinion, the broth has to be thick and rich for me to slurp up every drop of it. It’s quite unbelieveable that the soup base was gently simmered for 12 hours.

Apart from the lacklustre soup, I was a also little disappointed with the type of noodles served. Although fragrant, I felt that the curly Hokkaido yellow noodles were not firm to the bite and lacked the springy QQ texture. The boyfriend couldn’t agree more after eating the noodles from his own bowl.

Tried wafu sauce pasta? How about a regular bowl of Wafu Shoyu Ramen ($10.80)? It was our first encounter with a wafu shoyu broth and the blend of fishstock and shoyu tasted a little like diluted miso soup with a slight tinge of sweetness. Not too bad for people who like wafu sauce.

Chewy Charles spotted asparagus and carrot in the Misoyaki Roll and looked a little hesitant to eat his share. Surprisingly, we both enjoyed the crunchy pork katsu and soft vegetables wrapped within. Didn’t taste very cheesy even with the melted cheese layer. It’s so bite-sized, let’s not fuss too much over it 🙂

“Mini Size… Maximum Play”. I guess that this would be the main factor that might draw people to RamenPlay as the Mini Combo Value starts from a mere $11.80 and up.

  1. Oh I just had dinner at their Junction 8 branch 2 days ago!

Try their signature Sanpou Ramen (with tonkotsu soup) the next round. The braised pork cheeks are fab! Soup was tasty and cloudy with bits of pork protein precipitates/fat. The Bamboo Chicken was also quite interesting. 🙂

  2. In your opinion, where’s the best Reman in SG? I torned between Ippudo & Nantsuttei Ramen. Is there any better Ramen on this island dat u could recommend? Thanks ^^

    • I tried Ippudo once. Didnt like the thin noodles. My bf liked it though. Maybe I should revisit for a second opinion. Hehe. I quite like Santouka even though the broth was very salty. Another choice would be Keisuke Tokyo. I’m going there soon. Did a review on it previously but the prawn broth is no longer available 🙁 They have something new on the menu though, crab ramen!
