Xu Jun Sheng Teo Chew Cuisine: Teo Chew Muay for the Soul

Braised Platter ($8)

Last weekend, BB Chew and I met up with the gossipy foodies for lunch at 许俊盛 (隆记) Teo Chew Cuisine! This eatery has been around for more than 60 years and it has been changing its premises for a good five times already! We initially lost our way as we ended up along Joo Chiat Place instead of Joo Chiat Road and were famished by the time we found the place. It is never easy to decide on which cze char items to order when you are with a group of friends because most would go, “Anything anything”. In any case, we finally ordered after much prompting from the service staff 😛 The braised platter certainly was aromatic and further whetted my appetite. The watery Teochew style braising sauce is not overly spiced and you can be sure that the braised platter,consisting of pig intestines, pig skin and tau pok and tau kwa, was braised just right and had absorbed all the wonderful flavours of the gravy.

Pork Trotters (Tendon/Thigh)

We were expecting an entire pork trotter and were rather surprised by the presentation here. There were very little fatty parts in this one. All that we got were mostly very lean and tender pieces of meat. Definitely a must-order to go with a bowl of hot teochew muay!

Steamed Mullet
Steamed Mullet (Seasonal price)

I was secretly hoping that we would be able to savour the steamed pomfret but it seemed like every other table sitting around us had ordered the steamed mullet. Thus, we just had to have the same thing. Haha. The fish was really fresh but I will have to be honest with this one. The steamed mullet has this slight muddy flavor and is in fact an acquired taste.

Teochew Style Prawns with Beancurd

I liked everything about this teochew style prawns with beancurd dish – from the big juicy prawns to the beancurd with a slightly firm deep fried texture and silken smooth inside. Also worthy of mention is the rich-tasting gravy that is oh-so-addictive!

Preserved Radish Omelette
Preserved Radish Omelette ($5)

Omelettes are one of my all time favorites to go with porridge. The preserved radish omelette was light, fluffy and fragrant! I think I can even eat it on its own 😛

Traditional Prawn Roll (Ngoh Hiang)
Traditional Prawn Roll (Heh Chor) ($6)

The slices of traditional prawn roll are crisp on the outside and slightly moist on the inside. I would have preferred a crunchier filling.

Stir-fried Kang Kong with Sambal
Stir-fried Kang Kong with Sambal ($7)

Unlike the stir-fried kang kong with sambal that I have eaten at most places, these gave a good crunch with every bite. It was a pity that the sambal wasn’t really spicy at all.

I would personally recommend 许俊盛 (隆记) Teo Chew Cuisine if you happen to be around Joo Chiat area as this place serves a great variety of hearty and delicious teochew fare. It was nice catching up with the rest and keeping ourselves updated with all the recent happenings! 🙂
